College of the Atlantic – Bar Harbor, Maine  

With a setting as inspirational as our faculty,  College on Frenchman’s Bay in Bar Harbor provides the perfect retrate for you to shed the demands of everyday life, and immerse yoruself in your passion with like-minded adults.  

Rated by Trip Advisor and The New York Times as one of the top vacation spots, there’s something for everyone!   Our mid-day break provides an opportunity to tak advantage of it – from a visit to the top of Cadillac Mountain, biking, walking and/or swimming in Acadia National Park.  Plus… you can kayak off the COA pier! 

 

LODGING & MEALS 

COA lodging is in modern townhouse dorms, either in private rooms, or shared rooms.  Each townhouse houses up to 8 individuals and has a full kitchen, living area and dining area. Significant others are welcome.   B&Bs, motels and hotels are also close by if participants prefer that option.   Linens and towels are provided as part of the lodging fee. 

Meals begin with dinner on Sunday evening, and end with dinner on Friday night.   COA’s menu is considered one of the best in New England, with options for vegetarians and vegans. 

 

GETTING TO &  FROM BAR HARBOR / COLLEGE OF THE ATLANTIC 

Keep in mind, before you make your travel plans!

1.  Do you really need a car?

College of the Atlantic is located on Mt. Desert Island, steps from Acadia National park.   Keep in mind that you really don’t NEED a car in Bar Harbor.  A free and frequent shuttle bus — the Island Explorer –  goes to all towns on Mt. Desert Island from early morning through to about 10:00 pm. daily.     There is an Island Explorer stop on campus at College of the Atlantic.

2.   If coming by air, flying into Portland, Maine (PWM) is a great way to save money on airfare, and to get a non-stop (or 1-stop) flight.

3.   Samba Meets Jazz will be arranging private van service from Portland Maine directly to the campus of College of the Atlantic.   We will need to book early, so please contact us asap.

Fly to Bangor

Several airlines offer flights to Bangor International Airport, including Delta and uS Air, which have non-flight stops available available from NYC area and Boston (approximately 1hr 15 minutes from NYC).

The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle runs between Bangor International and Bar Harbor and will bring you directly to College of the Atlantic (for as low as $30). In addition to their regular schedule which is posted on their website, a shuttle bus can be arranged for a group of people with advance notice.

Rental cars and taxis are also available at the airport.  However, keep in mind that cars are not needed in Bar Harbor because there are FREE  and FREQUENT shuttle buses that go to all towns on Mt. Desert Island and to all destinations in Acadia National Park .

Fly to Bar Harbor

U.S. Air offers direct flights from Boston’s Logan International Airport to the Bar-Harbor Hancock County Airport in Trenton, about 15 minutes from the College. Free Island Explorer shuttle buses operate very frequently between the Bar Harbor Airport and the Bar Harbor Village Green (about 5 minutes from the College). Taxis are available from the Village Green for approximately $6.

Fly or Take Amtrak to Portland

Flying to Portland, Maine (PWM) is a great way to save money on flights, and to reduce the number of stops.   You can also take Amtrak to cut down on transportation costs.   Amtrak is a great ,option if you’re interested in seeing/exploring the Maine coastline via U.S. Route 1.  By car, Bar Harbor is approximately a 2.5-3 hour  drive from Portland.

One-way car rentals to Bar-Harbor Hancock County Airport are available.

In addition to the major airlines, Jet Blue flies into Portland.  They often have great promos.  Look for them!

Take the Bus

Concord Trailways, an unusually hospitable, modern (and clean!) bus service can connect you with the Bar Harbor-Bangor Airport Shuttle to Bar Harbor.  Believe it not, they help you with your luggage, provide earphones for video, water, and pretzels!  And the rates are low!
