SMJ – PARIS 2020

PARIS, FRANCE:  APRIL  16-21, 2020

Samba Meets Jazz – Paris, directed by virtuoso bassist multi-year Grammy nominee NILSON MATTA  will offer options for instrumental, vocal and tap dance studies in Paris.  Our instructional schedule will be from 1:30pm  – 7:00 pm, leaving ample time to explore the many cultural sites  and culinary delights of Paris, as well as nightlife in this city known as the City of Lights!

INSTRUMENTAL:   Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty.   Curricula will include Jazz & Brazilian ensemble, Improvisation & Harmony, Brazilian Rhythms, Styles & Phrasing, Rhythm Section Lab, Arranging and Brazilian Percussion.   The program will culminate with a performance on the evening of the 5th instructional day (Tuesday evening, April 21st).   While reading notation can be helpful, it is not necessary.

VOCAL:   Also working towards the culminating performance, vocalists will be coached (group and individually) with focus on song interpretation and phrasing, as well as singing in Portuguese (the latter is optional).   You will have an opportunity to rehearse 1:1 with faculty accompanist and faculty rhythm section.  as well as to join student instrumental trios/combos.  In this latter context, vocalists will participate as an instrumental member of the combo or ensemble, using your voice alongside other melodic instruments for the “head”, as well as improvising vocally and learning/playing percussion accompaniment.  While reading notation can be helpful, it is not necessary.

TAP DANCE:   Our innovative tap dance program merges study of traditional Jazz with Brazilian and Latin jazz.  As we know, tap is an expression of rhythm, articulation, melodic interpretation and phrasing.   With this is mind, tap participants will have a unique opportunity to further foster their skills by interacting and working with members of Samba Meets Jazz’ music faculty.

In this context, and in an intimate environment (approximately 6-10 students), you will be immersed in classes that focus specifically on, and/or integrate the following:  technique, Jazz, Brazilian Jazz and Afro-Cuban jazz repertoire, improvisation, rhythmic and theory explorations, articulation, phrasing, interpretation.

Instruction will take place at two Studio Bleu locations,  in close proximity to each other.

  • Instrumental and vocal classes will be held at Studio Bleu (7/9 Rue des Petites Écuries, 75010)
  • Dance classes will be held at either at the above-referenced Studio Bleu (7/9 Rue des Petites Écuries 75010) or Studio Blue (14 Boulevard Poissonnière 75009). These studios are a 7-10 minute walk from one to the other.

Samba Meets Jazz has identified several hotels, from 3-star to 5-star, beginning at $130 per night.  Please contact us if you’re interested in these possibilities.

Our program will begin Thursday evening, April 16th with an OPTIONAL  Getting to Know You Jam (6:30 – 8:00pm), followed by an OPTIONAL dinner.    Time and location will be shared.

Classes run from Friday through Tuesday (1:30pm – 7:00pm) beginning on Friday, April 17 at 1:30pm, giving us ample time to visit museums, cultural sites and/or rest-up, and partake of Paris night life!

Our culminating performance will be on the evening of Tuesday, April 21st.

Unless you reside within commuting distance, the earliest you would be departing from Paris would be Wednesday morning, April 22.
