Samba Meets Jazz Workshops has been organizing international workshops for the past seven years.  Spring 2017 marked our inaugural program in Europe (Ferrara, Italy) after 5 years of programs in Brazil.  Our 2017 Italy program drew participants from Italy, Belgium, Turkey, Austria, Norway and the United States.  Our 2018 destination is LISBON, PORTUGAL! 


LISBON, PORTUGAL:  April 2-8, 2018 

Under the direction of virtuoso bassist 2017 Grammy nominee NILSON MATTA, our 5-day immersion in Lisbon, Portugal, i geared to vocalists and instrumentalists and vocalists of all levels and music backgrounds.  





VOCAL:   Working towards Saturday’s culminating performance, vocalists will be coached (group and individually) with focus on song interpretation, phrasing, intonation & technique, scat singing, as well as singing in Portuguese. In this context, vocalists will have an opportunity to rehearse 1:1 with faculty accompanist, and faculty rhythm section, as well as to join student instrumental trios/combos.  Additional workshop options will include Choro (Chorino) music, the renowned Fado music of Portugal, Percussion Accompaniment for Vocalists, Brazilian Rhythms, Phrasing & Styles, Jazz Harmony & Theory for Vocalists, Chart Development, Arranging – to name a few! 

INSTRUMENTAL:   Participants will have the opportunity to work with each of our faculty. Curricula will include Jazz & Brazilian ensembles, Improvisation & Harmony, Brazilian Rhythms, Styles & Phrasing, Rhythm Section Lab, Arranging and Brazilian Percussion.

Samba Meets Jazz has booked reservations (with free cancellation option) at three hotels, providing  a range of price points.  Apartment rentals are also widely available in Lisbon.

Our program will begin Monday evening, April 2, and will culminate with our final performance on Saturday evening, April 7.   Unless you reside locally, the earliest you would be departing from Lisbon would be Sunday morning, April 8.



The week will commence on Monday evening with a Welcome Orientation followed by an optional group dinner in Lisbon.

Our Tuesday through Saturday  instructional schedule will typically be 2:30 – 8:30pm   — giving us ample time to visit museums, cultural sites rest up, and take in the gastronomy of Lisbon, where dinners begin late.   

Evenings will include optional dinner and jams with faculty,  faculty performance.  as well as “on your own” nights.   The week concludes with our SMJ student-faculty performance at Fabrica Braço de Prada, a well-know cultural institution in Lisbon.
