Samba Meets Jazz Workshops has been organizing international workshops for the past eight  years.  Spring 2017 marked our inaugural program in Europe (Ferrara, Italy) after 5 years of programs in Brazil.  Since then, our European programs (Ferrara, Italy and Lisbon, Portugal) have drawn students from Italy, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, Austria, Norway, Portugal  and the United States.  Our 2019 destination is PALERMO, SICILY. 

Palermo, Sicily:  April 23-28, 2019

Under the direction of virtuoso bassist multi-year Grammy nominee NILSON MATTA, our 5-day immersion in Palermo, Sicily is  geared to vocalists and instrumentalists  of all levels and music backgrounds.  Guitarist extraordinaire DAVE STRYKER and master vocalist DOMINIQUE EADE (New England Conservatory) will join Nilson.   

Our instructional schedule will be from 2:00pm – 8:00 pm, leaving ample time to go back in time and  explore Palermo, where the mountains meet the sea! 



VOCAL:   Working towards Sundays’ culminating performance, vocalists will be coached (group and individually) with focus on song interpretation, phrasing, intonation & technique, scat singing, as well as singing in Portuguese. In this context, vocalists will have an opportunity to rehearse 1:1 with faculty accompanist, and faculty rhythm section, as well as to join student instrumental trios/combos, Percussion Accompaniment for Vocalists, Brazilian Rhythms, Phrasing & Styles, Jazz Harmony & Theory for Vocalists, Chart Development, Arranging – to name a few! 

INSTRUMENTAL:   Participants will have the opportunity to work with each of our faculty.  Curricula will include Jazz & Brazilian ensembles, Improvisation & Harmony, Brazilian Rhythms, Styles & Phrasing, Rhythm Section Lab, Arranging and Brazilian Percussion.  



Instruction will take place in two locations:   Tatum Art Jazz Club and the Conservatorio de Bellini.   Both facilities have drums set, piano, amps available.   



Samba Meets Jazz has identified several hotels, from 3-star to 5-star.  Singles are as low as $55 per night, and doubles at $70 US per night. Please contact us if you’re interested in these possibilities.   



Our program will begin Tuesday evening, April 23, and will culminate with our final performance on Sunday evening, April 28.   Unless you reside locally, the earliest you would be departing from Palermo would be Monday morning, April 29..  



The week will commence on Tuesday  evening with a Welcome Orientation followed by an optional group dinner in Palermo.

Our Wednesday through Saturday  instructional schedule will typically be 2:00 – 8:090pm   — giving us ample time to visit museums, cultural sites rest up, and partake of the culinary delights of Palermo, where dinners begin late.   

Evenings will include optional dinner and jams with faculty,  faculty performance.  as well as “on your own” nights.   The week concludes with our SMJ student-faculty performance at Tatum Art Jazz Club a well-know cultural institution in Palermo.
