OVERVIEW: SMJ on BOSTON’S NORTH SHORE

VOCAL PROGRAM 

Working towards Friday’s culminating performance vocalists will be coached (group and individually) with focus on Song Interpretation and Phrasing, Technique and Intonation, Scat Singing, as well as Portuguese pronunciation for students electing to sing in Portuguese.  In this context, students will have opportunities to rehearse with faculty piano accompanist, faculty rhythm section, as well as to join student instrumental trios/combos/enssembles.  Workshop options will also include percussion accompaniment for vocalists, Jazz Harmony & Improvisation, Brazilian Rhythms/Phrasing/Styles, Theory for Vocalists, Chart Development, and Arranging — to name a few! 

  

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM  

Our instrumental program provides an opportunity for you to work with each of our faculty. Curricula includes daily Jazz, and Brazilian Jazz ensembles, Jazz Improvisation & Harmony, Brazilian Rhythms/Styles/Phrasing, Rhythm Section Lab, Arranging,  Brazilian Percussion, as well Encounters with Faculty — special sessions customized to students’ enrolled. 

 

 

SCHEDULE 

Saturday, July 29:   Participants may check in as early as 2:00pm on Saturday, July 29.   We encourage you to check in by 5:00pm since dinner will be served at 6:00pm.    If transportation logistics make this difficult, just contact us and we’ll make alternative arrangements.     On Sunday evening, we’ll have an Orientation get together, and music interviews to help organize ensemble groups.

Our daily schedule is 9am – 6pm with a built-in mid-day break for relaxing, practicing, private lessons, biking, beaching, etc.

Evenings include jams facilitated by faculty who join in, as well as faculty and student performances at local venue(s).  Both performances are open to the public.  We will be sharing details in case you wish to invite guests.  

Check-out on Friday, August 4:   If you are staying on campus, check out will be on Friday morning.  If you wish to remain on campus until end of day, please let us know so that we can make alternative arrangements.
